I've been ruminating all evening about the subject of tonight's post, and since I can't decide on one, I'm going to "riff" on a couple of things...Is it a park or is it an industrial site:
The post about the parcel of land that Abe Atiyeh wants to develop and the neighbors want to make into a park, generated a lot of discussion, which is a good thing. There were many varying opinions expressed about what the land has been used for, could be used for, or should be used for. Speaking for myself, I'm not even completely clear on the boundaries of the property in question. I thought I was, but after reading the comments, I'm now not sure.
So I am asking if some of the interested parties would like to take a walk with me? It's too cold right now, but the advance forecast suggests it may get into the 40's by the end of next week. Anyone who wants to get a little fresh air and get informed, is welcome. If you're interested in judging the situation for yourself, post a comment or email me directly. I'll connect everyone and find a date that works.
Did she or didn't she:
An article in today's paper, on page B1, mentioned that during the celebration of the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., at St. James AME Zion Church in Allentown, it was announced that the state had given a $400,000 grant toward building a monument to Dr. King and his wife, Coretta.
Someone close to the situation told me that one of those ceremonial cardboard checks representing the grant, was to be presented to the congregation in behalf of the state by none other than Siobhan Bennett, Democratic candidate for the 15th Congressional District. The story then goes that some members of the church objected saying it would turn the celebration of Dr. King's life into a political event.
The newspaper account does not say how or who made the announcement of the grant. Does anyone know by what means that news was delivered to the congregation?
Making it number six:
At the risk of incurring the wrath of fellow blogger extraordinaire, Bernie O'Hare, who has complained loudly and in no uncertain terms that he does not want to read one more post (I think Bernie said there have been 5 so far) about the opening of Johnny Manana's, a new restaurant in downtown Allentown, I will take my proverbial blogger life in my hands and tell you that I'm going to Johnny Manana's this coming Saturday night for the first time. Not only am I going, I am planning to take my camera, record the occasion for posterity, and then....YES, I am going to post about my experience. If it is a positive one, it will make number 6; so sorry, Bernie. But we may get lucky; I may hate the place.

pam, i know from attending a city council meeting that they applied for a special city requested liquor license that cost's less than regular market, i know they are in KOZ, i suspect they may have received other grants, such as the "restaurant grant program", which gives up to 50k. what did the mexican place in the 400 block of 7th get, ZERO, my favorite, the best in town, near the Good Shepherd, got ZERO. I hope you enjoy your meal, but it's not my kind of "fair"
Pam, I was just hired there.
Oh, all the fanfare about Mananas. Let's get out our flamenco dresses and castenets and dance!(I'm kidding) I enjoyed Amigo Mio near Good Shepherd many years ago, is it still there?
Pam I enjoyed reading your review of the Brew Works a while back, and I am looking forward to your review of Mananas.
I'll go there if Bernardo is working there.
dottie, yes, amigo mio is still there, and still the best. unfortunately i must report the the hamilton perk cafe, a coffee shop in the 800 block of hamilton has closed after 25 years.(its had several owners and names) it closed because of the lanta/parking authority/pawlowski move forward improvements to hamilton street=no foot traffic.
I love Amigo Mio and used to go there often; it was definitely the best Mexican/Spanish/Latin food in town. However their hours were so limited and it was so hard to get in, that I moved on in frustration. Thanks, Michael for reminding me that I need to return. We should all try to support local small business whenever possible, which brings us to the Hamilton Perk; sorry to hear they're gone.
Dottie, If you'll put on your flamenco dress, I'll click the castanets. Maybe I can even talk my husband into playing classical guitar for us...he's quite good, but very shy about performing in public.
I'm sure their new maitre d', Bernardo, will be pleased to serve as our master of ceremonies.
Pam,
I think we should have a "blogger's ball" so those who choose to remain anonymous can wear masks.
It's sad to hear about some small businesses closing.
I try to go to as many small family owned restaurants as possible. The prices are usually more in my budget and the service is better. And of course the food is great.
Pam, I'm glad you are flying solo, I will be changing the link on our blog to get here.
Dottie, as for a Blogger's ball, There have been attempts to get us in a room together for a sit down, but some anons have a good reason to stay that way. I'm willing to have those of us "out of the closet" meet. Maybe I will swing by Manana's Saturday night. My menu is limited, but I can still enjoy the aromas!
