Allentown Addendum:

For those of you interested in Allentown, you may want to scroll down to the "Brunch at Brew Works" post and click on comments. Both Allentown Brew Works owner Mike Fegley and City Councilman, Michael Donovan, have posted extensive comments.

I thank both of them for doing so. This is exactly what blogs are supposed to do: add to the public dialog and increase the amount of information available.

Councilman Donovan has also commented on the zoning issue regarding billboards along MLK Drive on the "Suckered-in" post. I'm presuming Mr. Donovan is savvy enough to know that when he writes such information on a public blog, we're going to be looking for follow-through.

Hello Pam,

I am used to not seeing billboards anywhere when I travel through Maine so I understand fully the beauty of parkways and that billboards spoil the reason they were built.

If I say that I am going to watch this closely and that I am not in favor of destroying a view that is precious (not least of which a parkway dedicated to a great man, then I mean it.

There is no need for a billboard on that road.

Also a public billboard is like a public comment. I would say the same thing in a meeting or a presentation.

Michael

Woops..."a public billboard..." meant to say "public blog!" My apologies..Perhaps a blog is a billboard?

Pam, I think it's wonderful that you've been able to elicit comments from Donovan and Fegley. Mt. Donovan is the only locally elected official I know to have started a blog after he was elected. Instead of pandering for votes - which I concede is important - he is seeking the views of his community. That's very commendable.

(My deleted post had too many typos).

Bernie,

I agree about Donovan and Fegley; I thanked them and commended them in my comment attached to another post. I think Mr. Donovan is very sincere about doing the right thing and he seems willing to listen to the public.

There are a few tiny glimmers of hope that this city council will not be a rubber stamp for the Pawlowski administration.

Pam as I understand it, the billboard zoning appeal has been withdrawn. I would like to point out the other issue, however. There were only 3 people at zoning that night opposing the appeal. Where was the interested community?

Anon 10:06, that is very good news.

As we used to say back in the 60's...Power to the People!

I heard there were only a few people who showed up for the meeting. I don't know if that is the total number or those who stuck it out till 10:30 p.m. when the issue was finally heard.

But whether by their personal presence at the Zoning Meeting or through their virtual presence on this blog, the bottom line is, the appeal has been withdrawn.

We Won. At least for now.

Hi Pam, I’d be delighted if your “readers” would look at the blog students in my graduate public finance course did for financial conditions in Allentown. See
http://allentownblog.wordpress.com/

In the past students also participated in a blog on Norfolk, Va.

Your readers should feel free to add to the Allentown blog or even the Norfolk, Va blog.

Best

BTW, the students have thoroughly enjoyed reading your blog as well as that of Morning Call.
