Ladies Who Lunch...and Vote

According to the Chinese calendar, each year is associated with the energy of an element, like water or earth, combined with the characteristics of a creature like a dragon or ox.

According to America's political calendar, this is the year of the fire woman.

We've watched Hillary Clinton turn into a seasoned campaigner and powerful speaker; we've witnessed Sarah Palin take the country by storm...thousands showed up today at a rally in Wisconsin to see her.

In response, the Democratic Party is sending out its strongest women surrogates to counter the Palin tide, including Gov. Jane Napolitano of Arizona and Gov. Kathleen Sebelius of Kansas. And in what must be a galling twist of fate, Sen. Hillary Clinton has been dispatched to Florida to stump for the man who beat her, to help him win a state where she got the most delegates, but where another woman from the opposition party is now the new darling. It makes one's head spin. But I digress.

Never being one to let any political grass grow under his feet, Congressman Charlie Dent (R) 15th District, dispatched a few surrogates of his own yesterday in the form of his beautiful wife Pam and her charming mother, Phyllis Serfass, who hosted a lovely "ladies lunch" at the Serfass home.

As shown in the above photo, the turnout was impressive. What I found even more impressive than the many successful and influential women who were in attendance, were the questions they asked during the Q&A. If Charlie was expecting softballs from this lady-like crowd, he didn't get them.
This was a well-informed group with serious issues on their collective mind: The subjects ranged from healthcare to the Russian invasion of Georgia.

The Chinese say this is the Year of the Rat. I say it is the year of the smart, determined, informed, woman who is going to change the face of politics as we have known it.

Exactly, Pam. It took a while, but what a group of distinguished women vied or are vying for high office this year.

Note about the Rep National Convention: Sarah Palin wasn't the only Republican woman governor to impress. Governor Lingle gave a great, crowd-moving speech as well.

I didn't know about Gov. Lingle's speech. I would have liked to hear that. I'll try to find it online.

And you are so right, women seem to finally be coming in to their own on the national political stage. We'll see if it's a trend or an anomaly.

The television coverage of the conventions, especially of the Republicans, was terrible: Hours of talking heads instead of letting us hear the speakers. The media has not won itself any fans this year.

It is now always the Year of the Rat in Allentown.

Scott,

I should have known you wouldn't miss taking advantage of a straight line like that.

All who live in Allentown are looking forward with great anticipation to next year's tax increases. I believe 2009 is the year of the ox, which is perfect since I'm sure ours will be gored.
