Which Do You Want First....

Okay, which do you want first, the good news or the bad news, with the interpretation of what constitutes good news and bad news being very subjective and totally from my point of view, and with somewhat limited information before all the numbers are in:

Good news: Ron Manescu appears to have won the Magisterial District Justice race in Allentown. Opponent Walter Felton, who started with a lot of good will and momentum, blew it by not playing by the rules. Not a good thing if you're going to be entrusted with enforcing the rules. Congratulations Ron. You ran a good, clean campaign and worked very hard. You deserve this win.

Bad news: Ed Pawlowski routed challenger Tony Phillips by almost 3 to 1. So it's four more years of smoke & mirrors and power point presentations. Let's hope City Council gets some guts and at least asks a few questions before passing a bogus budget.

Not quite as bad news: City Council remains all Democrat. Mike D'Amore is now positioned to succeed Pawlowski, which is his plan, although O'Connell came in a very close second in vote count, so we may see a little power struggle for leadership of council. Schlossberg came in third, and with this just being a stepping stone to higher office, he knows his voting record will follow him, which may motivate him to show some independence. The biggest disappointment on council is the apparent re-election of Julio Guridy. I won't elaborate on that one any further.

County good news: Glenn Eckert held off the well financed challenge of Hilliary Kwiatek. It's reassuring to know that elections do not always go to the highest bidder. And at the writing of this post, I admit I am surprised by the solid numbers being shown by County Executive challenger Scott Ott. It doesn't look like he's going to pull off a win, but he sure is giving Mr. Cunningham a run for his money. I predict this will not be the last we hear of Mr. Ott.

National fabulously good news: Christie knocked off Corzine in New Jersey. Hallelujah. Look out 2010...here we come.

I am very pleased Mr. Manescu won.

the results of the cunningham/ott race and the lopsided results of the two heavily contested district commissioner races show that D's stayed home and R's got out to vote. In Norco it was a complete sweep.

If R's had fielded a legit candidate to run for mayor, there could have been a knock out punch for county exec.

Key lesson: every position is worth contesting b/c if turn out is pathetic, you just might pull a miracle.

enjoy the democracy day hang over.

Pennsylvania should look at New Jersey for how not to do it. Pennsylvania benefited to a great degree as Progressives helped make New Jersey too expensive for the average person to live in, pushing wage earners into the northeastern part of PA. Corzine was the prototypical detached well to do white liberal male who never understood the little guy, except on a theoretical basis (he read about them in a book somewhere). He should have stayed at Goldman, Sachs where he could have drawn fat bonuses from TARP funds like the rest of the executives there. My congratulations to Mr Christie, he has a lot of work to do and he will get little help.
.
The other 2 key elections, Virginia and NY 23rd shows the Republicans are in good shape. Virginia was a stomping on the Democrats and despite the spin, was a thumbs down on the Obama administration and the Democrats in Congress. The NY 23rd did vote majority Conservative/Republican but the Democrat enjoyed a split between the 2. The Democrats shouldn't even mention this one.
.
As for the local elections, I had few expectations and they were met completely. Philips was a poor choice and I expected Ed to win a second term. I was pleased with Ott's showing, but it seems the people of Lehigh County like their candidates mediocre.

OBAMA
CORZINE

I understand these were the campaign signs in NJ.

Corzine went down hard.

And after all that time Obama spent helping him out late last week and over the weekend.

I heard the radio advertisements.

New Jersey has spoken directly to Obama -

"NO YOU CAN'T"

(bankrupt us, steal from us, insult us day and night, destroy our once great country)

OBAMA --- NO YOU CAN'T

Deliver jobs.

Lower property taxes.

Make a decision while our boys die in Afghanistan.

Changing subject but not really.

> Theft -- Reported by Drew Heller of 1900 block of Highland Street; four tires, worth $2,000, removed from car near home between 8 p.m. Monday and 6 a.m. Tuesday; leather seats slashed and exterior car paint scratched, city police said.

Hope Scott Ott runs again.

When we learned that Felton accepted those police pensions, it would have been almost impossible to vote for him.

Anon 3:52,

So am I. Sometimes the good guy does win, and this was one of the those times.

Anon 7:39,

No question that R's across the Valley were energized and showed up.

Can't count on that in 2010 when there will be so much on line that the D's will be bringing them in by van again.

As for the mayor's race...this does appear to be the year that an R could have made a good showing and perhaps a difference for the ticket, but the numbers still preclude a win.

Glenn, I agree with your analysis pretty much across the board.

Heaven help Christie in NJ, he's going to need it, and Heaven help us here in Allentown, we're going to need it, too.

Anon 1:05,

I knew Obama had stumped hard for Corzine but I wasn't aware there were "team" yard signs. That would be a fun item to have in a political memorabilia collection.

Despite all the spinning that's going on today, Christie's win is a blow to this administration. The downside is that it has now put the Dems on notice that there's trouble in paradise. They'll be ready and waiting next year.

Looking,

My second comment, addressed to "Glenn" is in response to your post. Sometimes the fingers are moving faster than the brain.

OT, but thanks for letting us know. Cars make great targets for the monsters that roam the streets looking for trouble.

Pamela Varkony said...

Anon 1:22,

I imagine you can count on that. In fact, after the showing he made, I'm sure he will come to the attention of the state and/or national Party.

Second Anon 1:22

The fact that he was one of the first to sign up for that lucrative pension deal most assuredly cost him votes. Voters are not likely to reward that behavior, especially when it involves their own tax dollars.

Yea, mom always loved Glenn more too.

Mrs. Varkony,
We wish you would set up a sub-blog--a bloggette of sorts--where folks could post any topic of the day so we don't get criticized for changing the topic or the theme. There are so many issues in Allentown such as Thursday afternoon's fire at the cost of $60,000 of Bucky Boyle Park's playground equipment. Why would anyone want to destroy this playground that brings pleasure to center city children and where were those anti-crime cameras?
